Vaccinations

You should get a yellow (WHO) card and have the yellow fever vaccinations and any other mandatory vaccinations entered on your yellow card before travelling to Benin.

The yellow fever vaccine is required before entering the country and your vaccination certificate will be examined at your point of entry. It is also recommended that you get vaccinated against hepatitis and typhoid fever. Depending on the length of your trip, you may want to look into getting tuberculosis, tetanos, meningitis, and polio vaccinations.

Malaria is a serious health risk while you travel around the interior of Benin but a standard daily or weekly tablet, which should be prescribed by your doctor, will normally prevent this infection.

Currency

Benin uses the Franc CFA. 1 Euro = 655.957 Fcfa

Months to avoid on the coast are June and September due to heavy rainfall.
In the north it rains in July and August. Sometimes, during December and January the "Harmattan" blows. This is a hot, dry, dusty wind, which originates in the Sahara and blows towards the south. In the north it is usually very cold at night when the Harmattan blows.
